Beetle Totem Vase — No. 03

This wide-mouth ceramic vase carries the series’ strong, ancient and primitive totemic presence through a more monumental silhouette. Four sculptural horn-like forms extend from the rim, while another set rises from the base, creating a visual tension between the upper and lower sections. Small hand-formed beads appear along the sides and base, continuing the series’ distinctive visual language.

The vessel is constructed in three separate sections: the main vase, the pointed sculptural section beneath it, and the circular base. Two concealed bearings connect the three parts, allowing the entire structure to rotate through gentle touch. This interactive construction introduces movement into the otherwise solid, totem-like form.

Finished with the series’ mirror-black glaze, high-temperature firing produces variations of glossy, mottled and matte surfaces, deepening the primitive and aged character of the piece. Hand-painted underglaze patterns and sculptural details are built up by hand, with the horn forms and other raised elements individually shaped and attached to the ceramic.
